STANGL - PUBLIC ART WORKSHOP *if funded by Hunterdon Co. Special Project Grant. TBD in June 2026
Phase 1 (April- September 2026) : develop the workshop
- digital presentation - Highlights / History of Stangl (including pottery of the area before it became Stangl).
- partner with Neuroarts Researcher(s) to amplify research on arts as wellness.
- marketing materials
- educational zine handouts. Pottery process - about Stangl production pottery
- ensure the workshops are as accessible as possible
- pottery samples
- gather supplies for the workshop (clay, molds, glazes, brushes)
- coordinate firing
Phase 2 (October 2026 - April 2027) : monthly Stangl Inspired Pottery Workshops
Run monthly Stangl Inspired Pottery Workshops, where participants learn a bit about the history of Stangl pottery as they help create public art by slip-casting and painting pottery.  The items produced will be used for a Stangl Pottery inspired public art work to be installed within the Stangl Arts & Culture District. The workshop will focus on the Stangl Birds of America, particularly the popular Stangl Pottery that was hand painted in Flemington.  Keeping within the Stangl Arts and Culture District, the pieces will stay on campus, and be fired at Flemington Pottery.

Phase 3 (May 2027 ) : public art - pottery totem pole(s)
The project will culminate with the installation of pottery totem pole(s) featuring the Stangl inspired pottery birds created by the community throughout the workshops, giving credit to all those involved in the process.
IF the STANGL WORKSHOP is not funded, we will work together to develop an arts workshop that would work best for the research.

WHY the STANGL WORKSHOP:
Flemington DIY is housed on the Stangl Arts and Culture District. Those who went to High School in Flemington before 1978 would go on field trips to Stangl to learn about Stangl Pottery, but Stangl’s history is no longer common local knowledge. The new Stangl Arts and Culture District signage leaves the passers by wondering “What’s Stangl?”. Meanwhile, older generations and collectors, that do remember Stangl come to this Arts and Culture District seeking Stangl Pottery walk into Flemington Pottery looking for Stangl Pottery and don't understand that the space now hosts the potters of today. There is a desire for more Stangl info, this workshop is a way to pay homage to those artisans before us. By creating a Public Art piece through the workshop, we will build up our current creatives while educate the community in a way that honors those that worked at this creative campus.
